Dear Madame/Sir,
We would like to welcome you to Hungary.
Whether you have just arrived or you have been living here for quite some time, there are certain hardships of being an expatriate.
We are not talking about the physical strains of relocating - landlords, transport, customs, etc. The difficulties we are concerned with are more the mental and emotional stresses that are followed by such a change.
People are different. Some think of living abroad as superb adventure. Their enthusiasm is not dimmed by the inevitable adjustments and possible troubles that come their way. Others however may find unexpected strains or actual difficult circumstances in their new country that bring acute psychological stress, even depression or an overall sense of not being able to cope. Let us list a few of the possibilities:
- Your relationships have suffered from your move.
- Your spouse is not here with you and we all know that calling on the phone is just not the same.
- Your spouse is here and he/she is depressed about the language barrier, the attitude of people and feels secluded. All the day's anguish is poured onto you.
- Your children may get upset or angry about the changes your move has caused in their lives. Or they may love that new environment but you are worried about their new friends and activities.
- Your friends are not here, colleagues are not the same and some of the amenities that you counted on are not available.
- You may have had a therapist at home helping you to relieve everyday life's stresses. You are without your therapist now and coping with the new situation by yourself is difficult.
- You are experiencing a mental or attitudinal barrier that is harder to penetrate than the language one while dealing with your local colleagues.
- You may be experiencing a phenomenon that is called cultural shock. You cold not put your finger on it, but you know something is not right. It is as if you had not been able to get over jet-lag. There may be some symptoms that you experience that had never been a part of you, like overeating, insomnia, lack of energy, mood swings, drinking, phobias or anxiety attacks, etc.
- You may have developed some other kind of symptom that could be traced back to the difficulties of adapting to the new environment.
- You may be in need for a personal consultant who can help you make the right decisions regarding your work as well as your private life.
Usually your company or organization will not have anticipated the kind of help you need, and if they have, you may well not want to share the difficulties you are experiencing with their representatives.
We are therefore offering a professional, highly trained, entirely confidential consulting service for individuals, couples and families. In case you decide to hear more about our services, please do contact us.
We are looking forward to hearing from you.
