Our Work and Our Goals
The proper function of the station is ensured
by its solitarity and its difficult accessability.
At the same time due to its quite large distance
- 25 km - to Hortobágy, of which 5 km is
an impassable dirt road throughout the year, it
represents serious problems, money, time and fatigue
for the veterinarian.
The birds treated require immediate veterinarian
care, an operation room and a laboratory infrastructure,
as well as professional follow-up care with uninterrupted
veterinarian supervision. The latter one requires
veterinarian presence several times a day, which
relative to the plant's distance and to the
road conditions, is impossible during most of the
year due to its inaccessability.
That is why the examinations, the operations
and the post-op care of the birds taken care of
here need to be performed in an easily accessible
location, under veterinary hospital conditions.
The treatment of wild birds and of wild mammals
and their handling requires proper experience. The
recovery period of the animal is greatly influenced
by the stress condition related to the care and
to the accomodation. An animal not used to humans
can lead to an irritation condition leading to death
even if it is touched.
As a large part of the birds found had been damaged
in an accident, their x-raying is definitely required,
which is usually followed by an operation. Their
transport to either x-raying or an operation significantly
reduces their chance for survival. Unfortunately
the large eagles (meadow eagle, imperial eagle)
are more sensitive to this, and many birds have
deceased due to this. For the least stressed-out
care and the professional work of the animals a
proper operating room, an x-ray room and the development
and the equipping of a laboratory are required.
The proper accommodation of the birds treated
is of the same importance, in a warm and air-conditioned
aviary, with special attention to birds in a seriously
damaged and shocked condition. These require several,
many times night shift veterinarian control and
care, as well as continuous supervision.
We have established a bird hospital with the
suitable equipment at an accessible location to
resolve the problems above, where the ailing birds
are under constant medical care and receive full-scale
service.
The examination, operating, laboratory and x-ray
premises vital for the operation of the veterinary
hospital are currently at a temporary location,
where these have already been developed at a veterinary
clinic, also serving other purposes, where the treatment
of the birds continuously entering is currently
under way.
In addition to the primary task of the Bird Hospital
Foundation undertaken in its main objectives, the
realisation of the bird hospital's operation,
the purchasing of the following fixed assets is
required in addition to the interior premises of
the bird hospital.
- Jeep: for field transport and search for
the ailing, even on difficult terrain, the saving
of birds, the transport of the ailing to a hospital
and the procurement of food
- A mobile PBG heating equipment for the winter
period of cigogneau
- Freezer: 1 pc for the storage of food, 1
pc for carrion storage
- Industrial video camera surveillance system:
the supervision of the ailing in the quarantine
and the volieres, without any disturbance
- Computer with Internet access: for data
storage, collection of knowledge, maintenance
of relationships
- Digital camera: for macro and micro pictures,
for the documentation of cases
- Digital video recorder: the documentation
of cases for showcasing the clinical diagnoses
on the Internet
- Home theater system for the display of educational
films
- Slide projector
- Prepared protected animals for diorama presentation
- Laboratory equipment:
- Dual-circuit laminal box for safe and professional
bacterological-diagnostical work;
- Stereomicroscopic photo connection for diagnostical
work;
- Hot air sterilisator: for the sterilisation
of instruments;
- Digital scale with 1 gram accuracy: bird
body weight and measurement of drugs;
- Laboratory centrifuge with bolt-headed insert
for diagnostic work;
- Multifunctional test-tube mixer;
- Reverse current electroforetic device for
diagnostic work;
- Densitometre for microbiological purposes
and for the determination of bacteria number;
We are happy to accept either donations for the
development and operation of the animal hospital
and for the purchase of the equipment above, or
donations for fixed assets.
